Laval-des-Rapides was one of the former municipalities of Île Jésus that amalgamated in 1965 to form the city of Laval. It was originally called L’Aval-des-Rapides, since it was located downstream (“l’aval”) of the Recollets rapids.

In April 2007, the Cartier, Concorde and Montmorency metro stations opened in the area, which is home to several educational institutions, including the Collège Montmorency, the Laval campus of the Université de Montréal and the UQAM pavilion at Collège Montmorency. Laval-des-Rapides is also home to the INRS Armand-Frappier Santé Biotechnologie Research Centre.
