Pont-Viau owes its name to a simple spelling error. The first settler to live in this area that would later become Pont-Viau was named Christophe Veau. However, a transcription error mistakenly turned it into Viau. The first Catholic parish of Pont-Viau was called Saint-Christophe, after this first settler.

Today, Pont-Viau is a Laval neighbourhood bordered by the Prairies Rivers and by the neighbourhoods of Duvernay, Laval-des-Rapides and Vimont. The Viau Bridge connects it to the neighbourhood of Ahuntsic on the Island of Montreal. The area is home to the buildings of two important religious institutions: the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MIC) and the Foreign Missions Priests.
