Kirkland is a city located near the western tip of the island of Montreal. It owes its name to former MP, Dr. Charles-Aimé Kirkland. When the Trans-Canada Highway arrived in the early 1960s, it split Kirkland down the middle; turning one half of the city into an industrial park.

Like all the other municipalities on the Island of Montreal, Kirkland merged with Montreal in 2002 – and demerged soon after in 2006. Kirkland has just over 20,000 inhabitants; approximately 45% are English-speaking.
