Depending on who you ask, the name Ahuntsic either comes from a young Huron who was converted to Christianity or was the nickname of a French colonist who arrived in New France in 1619 and later drowned in the rapids known today as Sault-aux-Récollets. Either way, Ahuntsic now belongs to the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. It boasts two CEGEPs: Collège Bois-de-Boulogne and Collège Ahuntsic, as well as Montreal’s largest Catholic church, the Church of the Visitation of Sault-aux-Récollets, which was built in 1750.
Cartierville is north end Montreal neighbourhood belonging to the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. It owes its name to the French Canadian statesman, Sir George-Étienne Cartier. In 1906, Cartierville changed status from village to city; 10 years later, it merged with the city of Montreal. The Cartierville airport opened before the First World War (although technically the airport is located in Saint-Laurent). Cartierville once housed the famous Belmont Park, an amusement park that delighted children of all ages. Today, it’s home to Sacré-Coeur Hospital, one of the largest in Montreal.
