Lachine is located at the southwestern edge of the island of Montreal, and is one of the city’s 19 boroughs. It owes its name to the fact French explorer Cavelier de LaSalle believed it was a route to China. Anyone who has studied Canadian history will have heard of the Lachine Massacre of 1689, during which several Lachine residents were killed by Iroquois warriors.

By the early 20th century, Lachine had become the country’s main industrial hub – thanks in large part to the opening of the Lachine Canal in 1824 and the arrival of the train in 1847. In 1872, Lachine was incorporated as a city. The Lachine Canal was closed in 1959 before reopening for pleasure boating in 2002.
