Montreal West is a mainly residential town located north of the old Grand Trunk Railway. Despite being almost entirely circled by the city of Montreal, it has no natural borders with the city. Montreal West is nestled on the Saint-Jacques Escarpment overlooking the Lachine Canal, and has a population of just over 5,000 inhabitants.
The history of Montreal West dates back to 1653 when the Sulpicians granted concessions to Jean Décarie. During the 19th century, the area representing what is now Montreal West was comprised of three farms, two of which belonged to Décarie’s descendants. The Town of Montreal West was incorporated in 1897, and its town hall was built in 1910.
