Boasting more than 85,000 inhabitants, Saint-Laurent is one of Montreal’s most populous boroughs. After 1825, it was also one of the island’s most populous parishes, second only to that of Montreal itself.

The arrival of the Fathers of the Holy Cross in 1847 greatly contributed to the parish’s development. Among other things, the congregation built Saint-Laurent College. The 20th century brought rapid industrialization to Saint-Laurent, including the birth of a booming aeronautical industry during the Second World War – an industry that remains very active today. The borough of Saint-Laurent boasts a resolutely multi-ethnic character as well as the second largest industrial park in Quebec.
