Thetford Mines is located on the Bécancour River, halfway between Quebec City and Sherbrooke. The city was originally called Kingsville before being renamed to Thetford Mines in 1905. A dynamic business city by nature, several homes in Thetford Mines were moved in the early 1970s to make way for mining operations.
Today, Thetford Mines ranks third in Quebec for the most SMEs per 1,000 inhabitants. The city is not all business, however; it boasts a summer theatre as well as a CEGEP and a popular annual Country Western Festival. The city also hosted the Quebec Winter Games in 1980 and the Summer Games in 2003.
