The Town of Mont-Royal – or TMR – is encircled by Montreal and largely originates from the Mont-Royal residential project which began in 1910 under the impetus of the Canadian Northern Railway (now part of Canadian National). With its two diagonal streets and central green space, TMR’s design is loosely based on that of Washington, DC. TMR was designated a national historic site in 2008.

CNR’s decision to invest in creating this model city was largely driven by the need to raise money so that it could dig a tunnel under Mount Royal, giving its trains access to downtown Montreal. TMR strongly opposed its forced merger with Montreal in 2002, and soon regained its independence in 2006.
