Since 2002, Rivière-des-Prairies has been a neighbourhood in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles. Prior to that, it was a former municipality that merged with Montreal in 1963. Rivière-des-Prairies takes its name from the Des Prairies River. In 1731, the village that would one day become Rivière-des-Prairies began to take shape. The village grew to a municipality in 1845 and later, to a city in 1954. The housing shortage that plagued Montreal after World War II drove families to the area, swelling its population. Today, Rivière-des-Prairies boasts two nature parks, Ruisseau-De Montigny and Pointe-aux-Prairies.

Pointe-aux-Trembles has a long history that dates all the way back to 1674 when the Saint-Enfant-Jésus parish was founded. And this history is anything but dull. In 1690, Pointe-aux-Trembles was the site of a battle known as the Coulée Grou between French settlers and the Iroquois. When the “King’s Road” opened in the latter half of the 18th century, Pointe-aux-Trembles became a relay station for travellers. In 1760, British General Murray landed on its shores, ready to capture Montreal from the French. In 1982, the city of Pointe-aux-Trembles merged with Montreal and became a neighbourhood in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles in 2002.
