Le secteur Montréal (Saint-Léonard)
Habiter à Montréal (Saint-Léonard)

Formerly known as Saint-Léonard-de-Port-Maurice, Saint-Leonard has been a borough of Montreal since 2002. Until the early 1950s, however, this area was predominantly rural. That all changed in the mid-1950s when a massive influx of Italian immigrants prompted the launch of a major housing development. In fact, the population of Saint-Leonard ballooned from 925 people in 1956 to over 50,000 just fifteen years later.

The opening of the Metropolitan Expressway in 1966 may have split Saint-Leonard in two, but it also made the area much more accessible. The natural Saint-Leonard Cavern has been a much-visited site since it was first opened to the public through guided tours in the early 1980s.
