Pierrefonds’ history dates back to 1741 when the parish of Sainte-Geneviève was founded, encompassing several neighbourhoods that eventually became towns. But its name only first appeared in 1904 when the parish of Sainte-Geneviève de Pierrefonds was created. The name then disappeared in 1935 before returning for good in 1958 when Pierrefonds became a city. So where exactly does the name Pierrefonds come from? From a local citizen who built a home inspired by the Chateau de Pierrefonds in Oise, France. Today, the “Château Pierrefonds” is a stately seniors’ home. As for the city of Pierrefonds, it merged with Montreal in 2002.

Roxboro has been a part of the Montreal borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro since 2004. But for a couple of years, it was merged with Dollard-des-Ormeaux. Prior to that, Roxboro was an autonomous city located in the northwestern part of the island, and was well-known for being debt- and deficit-free. This multicultural suburb is served by the Pierrefonds-Roxboro train station, which is accessible from Des Sources and Gouin boulevards. The frequent trains offer local residents who work downtown a convenient 27-minute commute to Montreal’s central station. Roxboro also boasts the William H. Boll Library and a fire station.
