Montréal-Est is an almost exclusively industrial city encircled by the city of Montreal. The many oil refineries that once dotted its landscape are now nearly gone.
Like all the cities on the island, Montréal-Est merged with Montreal in 2002. But it was the only one in the east end of the island to regain independence in 2006. When the oil company Shell decided to halt its refining activities in the area in 2011, it was met with much opposition. Indeed, it was a heavy blow to the local economy. On the other hand, the closure of Pétromont’s petrochemical plants in 2008 led to a sharp drop in pollution in Montreal.
