View profileVilleray is a Montreal neighbourhood in the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension. The village of Villeray was born in 1896 and shortly after joined with Montreal in 1905. It was home the sprawling Jarry Farm, named after its owner, Stanislas Jarry. When the farm was divided into 680 lots, one outcome was the creation of Jarry Park, which now lies in the heart of Villeray. From 1915 to 1930, the neighbourhood experienced a demographic boom that led to the construction of many schools and churches. It was also here that Montreal’s first public bath was built, completed in 1910. Following World War II, residential development in the area sped up considerably, and today Villeray is a quintessential Montreal neighbourhood. Stroll its streets and you’re sure to see plenty of clotheslines, exterior stairs and alleys. Saint-Michel merged with Montreal in 1986 and is now a neighbourhood in the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension. But back in the early 18th century, Saint-Michel boasted quarries and lime kilns at the intersection of Côte Saint-Michel and Montée Saint-Michel. After World War II ended, the population of Saint-Michel grew tenfold in just 20 years, jumping from 6,000 to 68,000 inhabitants. Despite this growth, the neighbourhood suffered considerably from the construction of the Metropolitan Expressway in 1959 and from high unemployment in the 1980s. The arrival of the TOHU Circus Arts City in 2004, however, has since triggered a promising revitalization.
Parc-Extension is a Montreal neighbourhood in the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension. Not only is it the city’s most densely populated neighbourhood, but with over 60% of its residents born outside Canada, it’s also a treasure of multiculturalism and multiethnicity. In 1910, Parc-Extension left the parish of Saint-Laurent to join the city of Montreal. Like many other Montreal neighbourhoods, the arrival of the train brought new residents, new industries and a new wave of economic vitality. Montreal’s industrial decline in the 1980s dealt a hard blow to Parc-Extension, but thankfully, the reopening of the Jean-Talon station in 1997 has since created interesting prospects for revitalization.
